04 / mandate · transition management

Chief Digital Officer.

The digital and omnicommerce seat that moves revenue online and rebuilds the digital operating model, with a defined entry and a defined exit.

What does the mandate own?

The digital mandate owns the omnicommerce and digital estate: the e-commerce channel, the omnichannel operating model, and the digital and data organization behind them. The operator carries the seat on the executive committee and moves the business to a larger, better-run digital share.

When do you bring it in?

Bring the mandate in when digital revenue has plateaued, when an omnichannel replatforming is due, or when a digital seat is open during a turnaround. It fits a transition where digital has to grow while the operating model is rebuilt underneath it.

What does the operator bring?

The collective steps in with an operator who has held the Chief OmniCommerce, Digital and Data seat on a retail executive committee and the CDIO seat across a multi-country estate, growing the online share and onboarding a marketplace at scale. The mandate ends with a running digital organization handed to a permanent owner.

What does the mandate own?

The digital mandate takes the omnicommerce and digital seat: the e-commerce channel, the omnichannel operating model, and the digital and data organization behind them. The operator carries it from the executive committee and moves the business to a larger, better-run digital share.

When do you bring it in?

Bring the mandate in when digital revenue has plateaued, when a replatforming is due, or when the seat is open during a turnaround. Digital has to grow while its operating model is rebuilt, and the mandate carries both at once.

What does the operator bring?

The collective steps in with an operator who held the Chief OmniCommerce, Digital and Data seat at Celio, moving the e-commerce share from 4.7% to 7%, ran VP E-commerce at Chantelle where order-to-invoice OTIF moved from 85% to 98%, and held the CDIO seat at Adeo and Leroy Merlin where more than 7000 marketplace suppliers were onboarded. The mandate hands back a running digital organization.

What the CDO mandate is not?

It is not the CIO seat. The CDO holds the digital ambition — channels, digital products, adoption — and not the information-systems estate underneath it. Where the estate is what needs an owner, that is the CIO seat.

It is not the CDIO seat either. The CDIO holds both halves in one accountability, and is the right shape only when separating them would leave a single roadmap with two owners who then have to negotiate.

It is not a marketing mandate. Digital here means the products and channels a customer transacts through, and the seat answers for their outcome rather than for their promotion.

The seat is measured on adoption rather than on launch. A digital product shipped and unused has moved a milestone, and the mandate is written so that distinction shows up in the reporting rather than in the year-end review.

We leave when the function can run without us: an identified permanent owner, a roadmap they hold, and a team that no longer routes through the interim.

What does an interim Chief Digital Officer own?
The mandate owns the omnicommerce and digital estate: the e-commerce channel, the omnichannel operating model, and the digital and data organization, carried from the executive committee as the accountable role holder.
When should a company bring in an interim CDO?
Bring one in when digital revenue has plateaued, when an omnichannel replatforming is due, or when the digital seat is open during a turnaround and the channel has to grow while the operating model is rebuilt.
