Direct answer
Technology Build Direction is an accountable direction mandate for a structural build. ARCHITEKT holds the target, sequencing, decisions, delivery governance, technical quality gates and handover while client teams and specialist vendors can remain the delivery engine.
Typical phases
Four doors into the same mandate
- Replatforming
- Modernization
- New product
- Post-acquisition integration
What ARCHITEKT holds
- Target state
- Architecture
- Sequencing
- Technical decisions
- Product and delivery governance
- Dependency management
- Vendor arbitration
- Quality gates
- Acceptance criteria
- Handover
What it does not require
An anonymous delivery army. The mandate is direction, not headcount: your teams and your specialist vendors remain the delivery engine.
What it is not
It is not Venture Building. Build Direction directs a construction inside an organisation that already exists, with its teams, its vendors and its constraints. Venture Building stands up an activity that does not exist yet. If there is no organisation around the build, the mandate is a venture, not a direction.
How the direction is held
One person carries the target state and the arbitration, and both are written down where the delivery actors can read them. Most structural builds have no shortage of plans; what they lack is a single place where a contested decision is settled and recorded.
The mandate holds the quality gates as well as the sequencing. A gate that the directing party does not own is a gate the delivery party grades itself against.
Where a structural build actually fails
Rarely on the engineering. It fails on the seam between actors: two vendors with incompatible readings of the same requirement, an internal team whose priorities were set by a different committee, and a target state that has drifted since the business case was signed without anyone declaring the drift.
Those failures share a shape — a decision that belongs to nobody. The mandate exists to give each of them an owner in the room, on the day, with the authority to settle it and the obligation to write down why. Most of what it produces is not architecture; it is settled questions.
The second failure mode is slower and more expensive: a build that meets every milestone and lands in an organisation that cannot run it. That is why handover is scoped as a phase from the start, with the client's own team running the gates before the mandate ends rather than after.
What it is not
It is not an interim seat. A seat holds a whole function, including everything unrelated to this build. Build Direction holds one structural build end to end. If the gap is the build, take the direction; if the gap is the function, take the seat.
It is not a delivery contract. Your teams and your specialist vendors remain the delivery engine, and the mandate does not supply headcount to replace them.
Exit
Delivery is incomplete until ownership has moved: acceptance criteria met, a named owner in place and the quality gates run by the client's own team.

Questions
- Do I need Build Direction or an Interim CTO?
- Build Direction holds one structural build end to end. An interim seat holds a whole function, including everything unrelated to that build. If the gap is the build, take the direction; if the gap is the function, take the seat.
- Do you replace our vendors?
- No. The mandate arbitrates between them against the target state, and holds the quality gates their work has to pass.
- How is this different from Venture Building?
- Build Direction directs a construction inside an organisation that already exists. Venture Building builds an activity that does not exist yet, on the client's account, through to handover.
- How long does a build direction mandate run?
- As long as the build, which is usually three to six quarters. The mandate ends at handover rather than at a date: acceptance criteria met, a named owner in place, and the quality gates run by the client's own team.
- Who does the actual building?
- Your teams and your specialist vendors. The mandate is direction, not headcount — it holds the target, the sequencing, the arbitration between actors and the gates their work has to pass.
